1969 BSA A75R Rocket 3
If you know, you know. The BSA A75R Rocket 3 is one of the great what-if motorcycles of the British industry. Built to take on the Japanese triples before anyone in Meriden or Small Heath had really figured out how to do it, the Rocket 3 came agonisingly close to changing the story. What it did produce, in the brief window between 1968 and 1972, was one of the most exciting and charismatic motorcycles ever to roll out of Birmingham.
This 1969 example is about as clean as you will find. The odometer reads 1,309 miles, and after spending years in a private collection with minimal use, the bike presents in outstanding condition. The candy red paint with the classic BSA two-tone treatment is deep, glossy, and consistent across all panels. The matching Raygun mufflers, the most distinctive feature of the Rocket 3 silhouette, carry chrome that is absolutely first-rate, bright and without pitting. Both Smiths instruments, speedo and tacho, are correct and present. The black vinyl seat with cream piping is intact and presentable.
Original twin horns are retained, as is the correct standard points ignition. The fuel tank is clean internally, a new battery has been fitted, and all lights are reported to be working. The vendor notes a slightly sticky clutch and carburettors that may benefit from a balance, both of which are simple and expected on a bike that has been stored rather than regularly ridden.
With only 1,309 miles recorded, a complete and correct complement of original components, and excellent chrome and paint, this is a machine that will attract serious attention from British motorcycle collectors worldwide. The Rocket 3 name is recognised and respected from Goodwood to Daytona, and examples in this condition do not come up often. Developed alongside the Triumph Trident as part of BSA-Triumph's response to the Honda CB750, only a handful of seasons separated these bikes from the end of the BSA marque, making survivors like this increasingly treasured by the year.
