Description:

1950 Vincent Comet

The Vincent Comet. For anyone serious about British motorcycles, that name needs no introduction. The Stevenage-built single from the early 1950s was arguably the finest solo-cylinder motorcycle on the planet when it left the factory, and this particular example has the credentials to back it up.

This 1950 Comet carries triple matching numbers and is accompanied by a Vincent Owners Club Certificate of Authenticity, factory production sheets, and build specifications. That is not just nice to have, that is the difference between a bike that smashes its estimate and one that limps past reserve. It has also been in the same hands since 1987, which tells you something about how it has been treated.

The bike shows 5,419 miles on a Smiths Chronometric speedometer, and the photos bear out a motorcycle that has been ridden a little and looked after a lot. The black paint with gold pinstripe is an older restoration, properly done and holding up well. The Birmabrite alloy mudguards have the correct satin finish you would expect. The Girdraulic forks, Vincent's own patented design, are complete and correct. The Craven carry rack over the rear mudguard is a period accessory that adds to the provenance rather than detracting from it.

The bike now runs a Lucas electronic ignition system fitted by Bob Dunn, one of the UK's leading Vincent specialists. The cylinder and piston are new, and an Amal Mk2 carburettor is fitted. The wheels are original, the cases show honest patina rather than heavy restoration polish, and the engine is reported to run well.

Mechanically, this is a bike that has had genuine specialist attention. Cosmetically, it is honest. Numbers-matching Comets with documentation this strong are genuinely rare, and they only get rarer. This is a collector's machine, and the right buyer will know exactly what they are looking at.
