Description/extras: AS GOOD AS IT GETS! On offer is this genuine 1977 HDT Holden LX Torana driven by John Harvey during the 1977-1979 Australian Touring Car Championship. It is arguably one of the most important pieces of Australian Motor Racing History to go under the hammer in a very long time. Being presented in the correct HDT Marlboro livery and bearing the #76, this amazing car still runs as good as the days it was thundering around the tracks in the late 70's in the hands of the great John Harvey. The sale will include a multitude of racing equipment, spares necessary for racing, 3 sets of wheels and tyres, also John Harvey Worn Jacket, boots, helmet, trophies, racing records and an enormous array of memorabilia items, (Please find PDF document attached at the bottom of the page.)

The Torana was the most successful Australian Touring Car ever to be released by GMH. It’s achievements in the 1978 season have been unmatched or unrivaled by any other Australian Motor Car. It created history as the first truly homologated car built purposely for motor racing and was by far the most successful.

The Marlboro Holden Dealer Team under the supervision of the then team Manager Mr Harry Firth, built the car and his team then fitted all the components to the car.

Its first race outing was the Adelaide Rothmans 250 …… 1977.

The Marlboro Holden Dealer team had a change of management in 1978 and Mr John Sheppard took over running the team in 78 and 79. This car was designated to John Harvey in 1977 and he was the regular driver of this car throughout the period of 1977-1979.

During the 1977 Bathurst John shared the car with West Australian MHDT driver Wayne Negus and in 1978 Bathurst, John shared the car with Charlie O’Brien. During practice for the 1978 Bathurst race Charlie crashed the car and over night repairs left some very disfiguring characteristics on the car and prior to the current owner purchasing the car John Sheppard looked at the car at Philip Island confirming these particular facts.

LINE OF OWNERSHIP

The car was sold in 1981 to car dealer in Shepparton, then purchased by Custom Radiator and Windscreen Pty Ltd of Benalla Rd Shepparton and was never used or modified in any way as the next owner of the car also in Shepparton confirmed when he purchased the car it was still in the MHDT livery and was complete. A letter from the then Director of HDT Racing Pty Ltd Mr John Harvey indicates the knowledge of the sale of the car to CR+W and this letter was provided to the Shepparton based owner prior to his purchase of the car in 1983. Had they quoted the VIN number to Harvey he could have told them quite precisely which car it was at the time. The owner then moved to Perth taking the car with him and he owned the car until 1986. During that time the car was raced only 5 or 6 times driven by Graham Hooley at the Wanneroo Circuit. The car was painted pale blue where the original red was and Sheil seats were introduced on the sides.


The car was then sold in 1986 to an Adelaide based collector who owned the car until his death in 1992. He was residing in Adelaide when he was diagnosed as terminally ill and he passed away on a dialysis machine. His grandmother had the task of sorting his affairs and as she was in a church group she received assistance through that group by a gentleman who was an ambulance officer at that time.

The car was then put to auction where it was passed in but then subsequently purchased by another collector of Box Hill, Melbourne in 1993.

This collector was involved with various race teams throughout the Group C period and had owned and restored several other period vehicles and restored the car in 1993 to its present form and it had been displayed at both the National Motor sport Hall of Fame at Bathurst and the museum at Philip Island.

The current custodian purchased the car in 2002 and has had an association with John Harvey since 1999. John was kind enough to provide the racing history to the best of his knowledge, which is as follows-
