Description/extras: 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III
For many car enthusiasts there is one icon among the multitude of great Aussie muscle cars which shines brighter than the sun; the Phase III GTHO. For Ford fans this is the pinnacle, for worshipers of other faiths there is a grudging respect for the legend of the XY GTHO and for the rest, the pull of the GTHO lore has consistently showed in high sales prices for decades.
The legend, the appeal and the raw aggression of the XY GTHO is embodied in this 1971 GTHO Phase III Falcon. Not only is this car a genuine and verified XY GTHO Phase III, it still sports the ‘Quality Control’ 351ci Cleveland engine it was raced with in the 1971 Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Mount Panorama, Bathurst, one of only 20-25 such engines built by Ford specifically for dealers to use in ‘The Great Race’.
Legendary dirt track racer Garry Rush and open-wheel ace Damon Beck were the gun drivers chosen after Bryan Baldwin, the dealer principal of Baldwin Ford in North Sydney, was talked into bankrolling the Beck/Rush tilt at Bathurst glory. Not that Baldwin need much persuasion being a motorsport fan and a friend of Beck’s for a number of years.
The car qualified 9th on the grid after Beck posted a 2:46.2 lap in qualifying and with Rush taking the first stint, started the race and for his 41-lap shift kept in touch with the top 10 before pitting and handing over to Beck with the caveat “watch them brakes”.
But brakes weren’t to be the biggest problem for 61E that day as a fault with the five-slot wheels which Ford knew about prior to the race presented itself in the form of the hub breaking away from the rim cutting short Beck and Rush’s bid for glory on lap 117 of 130. Being just 13 laps short of finishing in at least eighth place, in front of Peter Brock no less, and possibly higher as Rush was rapidly reeling in the Charger of Geoghegan ahead of him before the incident, was crushing for drivers and team alike but the car had one more race outing in December at Oran Park where Rush put it into the lead before the clutch failed ending the racing career of 61E.
Today this GTHO still presents almost as it did in 1971 and apart from an exterior respray in the original Raw Orange is mostly original but benefiting from a finely researched history plan complied by the current custodian, executed with the utmost precision and dedication to return the car to its 1971 Bathurst livery.
To say this XY GTHO is more desirable and valuable than any GTHO road car because of the provenance of its racing history alone is an understatement. The rarity of the QC engine still being in place is unheard of. The status of its drivers in period and the fact it ran almost the full race distance at Bathurst is amazing. But it’s the massive appeal this car has with collectors, race aficionados and nostalgists everywhere, even those who have the Red Lion carved into their bones nod appreciatively when they see this Phase III, and that is why this car is a legend.
Factory options; seat belts, laminated screen, LH mirror, 36-gallon tank, eight-track player, Globe wheels.
