1864 SYDNEY MINT GOLD SOVEREIGN SLABBED NGC PROFESSIONALLY, JUBILEE HEAD, SYDNEY MINT, GRADED XF 45 Sydney Mint Sovereign. The Australian Gold Rush immediately needed a standard means for Gold handling, fair exchange and storage. The Old Rum Hospital in Sydney was established in 1855 to strike gold Coins based on English sovereigns' imperial size and weight. Urgency led to a unique design with Australia across the Reserve and Sydney Mint one sovereign in the Legend. Not Being of the Imperial design format, London Ordered their cease & legal tender only in Australia. The Last issue was in 1870 and 1871 saw the traditional shield and St. George-type designs replacing the Sydney Mint Sovereign.
