The Hafco Metalmaster HM-48 is one of the most popular geared-head mill/drills sold in Australia through Hare and Forbes Machinery House. It combines milling and drilling capability in a single floor-standing machine, making it the centrepiece of small workshops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments. The 6-speed mechanical gearbox delivers spindle speeds from 95 to 1,800 RPM across two belt positions and three gear ranges, covering everything from heavy ferrous milling at low RPM to high-speed drilling of non-ferrous materials. The powered quill downfeed with digital auto-feed rate display (in mm/min) is a standout feature, allowing precise, automated drilling operations. New HM-48 units retail for approximately $5,000 to $6,500 from Hare and Forbes.
From the photos, this August 2011 build unit appears to have been in active industrial use. The headstock/gearbox shows the Hafco Metalmaster branding prominently with the speed selection chart clearly legible. Two gear change levers and a variable speed slider provide the six speed steps. The operator control panel on a swing arm features spindle forward, reverse, and stop buttons, coolant on/off, powered headstock up/down buttons, and an emergency stop. A flexible coolant delivery nozzle (blue articulating hose) is positioned at the spindle. The cast iron table with T-slots is visible with a drill chuck installed in the spindle. The enclosed blue base cabinet houses the coolant reservoir and electrics. The data plate confirms serial 1108001, August 2011 manufacture, distributed by Hare and Forbes.
