Description
The full-size Jeep Cherokee SJ is one of those trucks that flew under the radar for years while its smaller XJ replacement became the poster child for the nameplate. Now the big SJ is having its moment, and Australian-delivered examples like this 1982 Cherokee S are genuinely rare finds. Built at a time when Jeep still meant rugged American iron, the SJ combined a massive V8 with a body-on-frame chassis and enough interior space to comfortably seat six adults.
This Cherokee presents in white with the expected patina of a 43-year-old working vehicle. The paint holds reasonable coverage across most panels, though there is bubbling and flaking on the tailgate below the rear window, paint chipping around the lower sills and wheel arches, and surface rust at the door seam areas and rear roof gutter line. The aluminium bullbar up front is solid and gives the truck a purposeful stance. The Jeep AMC fender badges and rear "Cherokee" script badge are all present and original. White steel wheels are fitted all round with mixed tyres showing adequate tread.
Inside, the tan vinyl and cloth interior has held up well for its age. The front bucket seats have been retrimmed in tan leather/vinyl and present cleanly, while the rear bench retains its original cloth upholstery. All four door cards are intact with their chrome trim strips and manual window winders. The dash features the original woodgrain instrument binnacle housing the speedo, fuel, temperature, and oil/battery gauges. An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel with polished spokes has been fitted and suits the character. Three Speco aftermarket gauges (oil pressure, water temperature, voltmeter) are mounted on the dash top. A Pioneer DEH-2050MP head unit has been installed, and the original quartz clock is still in place. The headliner appears intact. A fire extinguisher is mounted under the dash.
Under the bonnet sits a V8 with a round air cleaner, blue spark plug leads, and a Century battery. The engine bay shows honest, working condition. An LPG conversion has been professionally installed with an AAFRB (Automotive Alternative Fuels Registration Board, Victoria) compliance plate confirming the installation meets Australian/New Zealand Standard 1425. A petrol/LPG selector switch and LPG gauge are fitted under the dash. A thermo fan override switch is also fitted. The rear cargo area features a shelf with spare tyre storage below and a cargo barrier. Two storage bins and what appears to be spare parts are included. A towbar is fitted at the rear.
The original 1982 Jeep Cherokee/Wagoneer/Truck owner's manual is included along with the Pioneer stereo manual and three keys.
