Vintage Shell Motor Oil Petrol Station Collection - Early 20th Century

Lot Contents

This exceptional collection comprises authentic Shell Motor Oil petrol station memorabilia from the early 1900s, featuring two distinct items of significant historical and collectible value:

1. Shell Motor Oil Tin - One Imperial Gallon

A substantial rectangular metal container with original Shell branding in yellow and brown tones. The tin displays the classic Shell scallop logo and "MOTOR OIL" text in period typography. Marked "ONE IMPERIAL GALLON NET" on the upper edge. Shows authentic patina consistent with age and storage. Dimensions approximately 280mm (H) x 200mm (W) x 100mm (D). This is a genuine example of early Shell packaging from the British Imperial era.

2. Shell Motor Oil Hanging Sign - Double-Sided

An ornate wrought iron bracket sign featuring the iconic Shell Motor Oil branding on a circular enamel face. Yellow background with red lettering reading "MOTOR OIL SHELL GASOLINE" surrounding the central Shell scallop motif. The sign is mounted on an elaborate scrolled iron bracket with decorative flourishes and a vertical mounting post. Diameter of sign face approximately 450mm. The ironwork demonstrates period craftsmanship with hand-forged scrollwork typical of early 20th century petrol station installations. This style of bracket sign was standard for roadside petrol stations and garages throughout the British Commonwealth.

Condition & Authenticity

All items display authentic patina, rust, and wear consistent with genuine vintage petrol station memorabilia that has been stored and preserved over many decades. The metal surfaces show natural oxidation, surface corrosion, and colour fading typical of period-correct items. No items have been artificially aged or restored. The branding, typography, and manufacturing techniques are consistent with documented Shell Motor Oil products from the early 20th century.

Historical Significance

Shell Motor Oil was one of the earliest and most prestigious motor oil brands in the British Empire and Commonwealth nations. These items represent the visual identity and retail infrastructure of the petrol station era before standardised modern forecourt design. The hanging sign bracket style was ubiquitous at independent garages and small petrol stations throughout Australia, Britain, and other Commonwealth territories from approximately 1910-1950. The cylindrical pump represents early mechanical dispensing technology before electric pumps became standard.

Collector Appeal

Vintage petrol station memorabilia has become increasingly sought after by collectors of automotive history, industrial design, and advertising ephemera. Complete collections featuring multiple items from a single brand are particularly desirable. The Shell brand carries strong collector recognition and the Motor Oil product line is well-documented in petrol memorabilia reference guides.

Condition Notes

The tin shows surface rust, patina, and minor dents consistent with age and use. The enamel sign face is intact with minor chipping to the enamel edge. The wrought iron bracket is structurally sound with surface rust and oxidation.
