The Build
Holden HZ cab chassis units are becoming genuinely hard to find, and the single cab variants harder still. This 1978 example has been built into a proper show truck. The body carries a full respray in a deep dark bottle green, finished with a red pinstripe detail that runs through the tray framework and wheels. The stance is low, sitting on chrome 100-spoke wire wheels with low-profile tyres and red pinstripe bead detail all round. The front has been restyled with a custom billet-mesh grille, polished headlight surrounds, and a custom chin spoiler below the bumper. Large chrome external mirrors are fitted. The flat tray body is aluminium checker plate with red-painted steel framework, presenting clean and serviceable.
The original Holden 202ci (3.3L) inline 6-cylinder engine is retained, confirmed by the factory engine code L20 on the build plate and the "202" casting in red on the block. Engine number 0L953201 is stamped and readable. The factory Trimatic M22 automatic transmission is retained, with a B&M ratchet floor shifter conversion replacing the original column shift. The engine bay is tidy and the engine presents well in its characteristic red paint. An aftermarket chrome air cleaner and an aluminium radiator are fitted.
Inside the cab, a pair of period-style bucket seats are trimmed in black vinyl with a green check insert panel, matching the colour scheme of the exterior. The factory HZ dash is in place with the original instrument cluster and speedo reading 205,444 kilometres. An aftermarket chrome 3-spoke steering wheel is fitted. A B&M ratchet floor shifter sits on a centre console. Period-style aftermarket cassette head unit is installed. The dash pad shows some cracking consistent with age and heat. Both headlining and door cards are in serviceable condition. The compliance plate (05/79) confirms VIN BHZ19400A, the build plate records engine L20 and trans M22, and both GM body ID plates are present with rivets intact. Two original GM keys are included.
