Description:

1974 Holden HQ Cab Chassis Flatbed Utility - Yellow - 38,524km - 253ci V8, Automatic

One of the rarest HQ body styles around, wearing a colour combination that turns heads at 100 metres.

The Ute That Built Australia

Holden HQ utilities defined a generation of Australian working life and weekend fun, and the cab chassis variant is the rarest of the breed. Built in August 1974 at the Elizabeth plant, this example carries a factory cab chassis body (Model HQ 80160, Body 119342-A) and has been treated to a fresh flatbed tray finished in matching yellow, with a solid hardwood timber floor and full-width aluminium headboard. Practical? Absolutely. But this one goes well beyond practical.

Under the bonnet sits Holden's 253 cubic inch V8, confirmed by the polished chrome rocker covers bearing the "253" stamp. Mated to a Hydramatic automatic transmission and driving the rear wheels, it delivers the classic burble and pulling power that made these engines a firm favourite. The engine bay is tidy, with a chrome air cleaner and the sort of workmanlike presentation you'd expect from a vehicle that's clearly been cared for over its 38,524 kilometres. Additional instrumentation includes aftermarket oil pressure and temperature gauges mounted in the console, so the driver knows exactly what the V8 is up to at all times.

Inside, the previous owner has put some real effort in. The bench seating has been replaced with individual buckets re-trimmed in a sharp two-tone yellow and beige combination that ties the interior perfectly to the exterior. A sports steering wheel keeps the driving feel lively, and a Sony head unit handles the audio. Tan door trims and matching beige carpet complete the cabin, which has aged gracefully for its years. The Holden-branded instrument cluster, fuel gauge and dash layout are all original and intact, giving the interior that authentic HQ feel while the custom additions keep it fresh.

On the outside, the striking yellow duco is complemented by a contrasting black bonnet stripe with yellow pinstripe trim, a combination that gives this HQ a proper hot-rod personality. Chrome five-spoke alloys front and rear replace the factory steelies and suit the overall look well. The bodywork is straight and presents well for its age, with the usual minor cosmetic patina you'd expect from a genuine 1974 survivor.
