Description
The A60 Celica Supra arrived in Australia as something genuinely different. Where the standard Celica made do with a four-cylinder, the Supra carried Toyota's 5M-series inline-six in the engine bay, combined with a liftback body, T-bar roof, pop-up headlights, and a full electronic digital instrument cluster that was extraordinary technology for 1983. Australian examples were assembled by Australian Motor Industries (AMI) in Port Melbourne to full ADR compliance, making them right-hand-drive builds spec'ed specifically for this market rather than grey imports.
The AMI compliance plate is present and legible, confirming Toyota Celica Supra Liftback, MA61 chassis, November 1983, seating capacity 4. The Toyota chassis data plate confirms model MA61R-BLPQEQ, engine 5M-E 2,759cc, frame number MA61-0107787, and A43DL transmission. The 5M-E is Toyota's 2.8-litre inline-six in carburetted specification, paired here with the A43DL four-speed automatic with overdrive.
