1950 Fiat 1400 Sedan - Black over Red Vinyl - 69,055 Miles - Rare Postwar Italian Classic, Private Collector Owned

Price Guide: $8,000 - $14,000

1950 Fiat 1400 4-door sedan. Rear wheel drive. 1.4-litre inline-4 petrol. Manual transmission (column shift). Indicating 69,055 miles. 6 seats.

Description

The Fiat 1400 holds a genuinely significant place in automotive history. Launched in 1950, it was the first Fiat designed entirely in-house after the war and the first mass-produced Italian car with full unitary body construction. Styled by Dante Giacosa with independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, and a flat-floor interior, the 1400 represented Fiat's leap into the modern era. It proved Italy could build more than economy vehicles. Production ran from 1950 to 1958, and genuine survivors outside Europe are rare enough that many Italian marque collectors will never encounter one.

This example is presented in deep black with good gloss and panel alignment across the distinctive fastback body. The steel wheels carry correct Fiat hubcaps and the chrome bumpers front and rear are in presentable condition. The interior is a striking contrast, with red vinyl bench seating across both front and rear rows preserved in reasonable order. The original round instrument cluster is intact, carrying speedometer, fuel gauge, ammeter, and temperature gauge. The large two-spoke steering wheel bears the Fiat horn emblem at its centre, and the horizontal ribbed dashboard with chrome "1400" script badge, glovebox, and period pull-knob controls are all present and correct. The column-shift manual gear change lever is in place. Aftermarket oil pressure and water temperature gauges have been added below the dash, a sensible practical addition on a car of this age. Rubber floor mats supplement the original carpets, which show wear consistent with a 75-year-old vehicle. Under the bonnet sits the original 1.4-litre inline-four with a UNI air filter, presenting in honest, running condition. The boot contains spare parts, a useful bonus for a car this scarce.

Very few Fiat 1400s made it to Australia and fewer still survive in this condition. This car has been owned and preserved by a private collector. For the Italian car enthusiast seeking something nobody else will have at the next concours or Italian marque day, a postwar Fiat 1400 is as rare as it gets in this country. Comparable postwar Italian classics of this era and significance trade through specialist auction houses and private sales in the $20,000 to $40,000 range depending on condition and provenance, with genuine running examples at the top of that bracket.
