Description

A circulated example of the 8 Maravedis copper coin struck under Queen Isabella II (Isabel II) of Spain, dated 1848. The obverse carries a right-facing bust of Isabella II with the legend "ISABEL 2A POR LA G. DE DIOS Y LA CONST." (by the Grace of God and the Constitution). The reverse displays the crowned royal arms of Spain in a cruciform arrangement, quartered with castles and lions, with a central escutcheon. The denomination "8 Ms" (8 Maravedis) appears on the reverse along with what appears to be a mint mark, though heavy wear makes precise identification difficult. The coin is struck in copper, which is standard for the Maravedis denomination. The coin displays heavy, even wear throughout; the portrait outline is discernible but detail is significantly smoothed. Dark, encrusted patina consistent with over 175 years of age.
