Description

A circulated example of the 1917 Commonwealth of Australia penny. Obverse carries the left-facing crowned bust of King George V by Sir E.B. Mackennal, with the standard GEORGIVS V legend. Reverse shows the ONE PENNY denomination with COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA legend, two wheat-stalk ornaments, and the date 1917. No mint mark is visible below the date, identifying this as the Melbourne Mint issue. The coin displays even medium-to-dark chocolate brown toning throughout, natural and consistent with age. Wear is moderate across the crown, hair, and robe detail on the obverse; lettering and inner bead circle remain bold on the reverse. A small area of green verdigris is noted near the lower rim of the reverse at approximately the 7-8 o'clock position. Surface contact marks are present in the fields. Coin shows possible evidence of a light past cleaning, though the coin has since retoned naturally. Not a key date.
