Price Guide: $18,000 - $26,000
1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL, W126 long-wheelbase sedan, 5.6-litre M117 V8 petrol, automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive, 192,180km, 5 seats, with logbook and documentation.
Description
The W126 560SEL was the flagship of its generation without qualification. Built through the final years of the W126 series before the W140 took over in 1991, the 560SEL represented the absolute top of the Mercedes range: the longest wheelbase, the biggest engine, and the highest level of passive safety technology available at the time. The 5.6-litre M117 V8 produced 279 kilowatts in Australian specification, moving the big four-door with the kind of effortless authority that only a proper flagship sedan can deliver. This is a car that heads of state were chauffeured in. The W126 generation is now widely regarded as the last of the truly overbuilt Mercedes, a reputation it has more than earned.
This Thomastown-based example presents well in midnight blue with a cream leather interior. The exterior paint holds good gloss with strong depth across all panels. Panel gaps are even and the body lines are straight. Multi-spoke BBS-style aftermarket alloy wheels replace the original Bundt items, fitting the arch well and suiting the era. The interior is the characteristic W126 setup: cream MB-Tex door cards that have held up well, burl walnut trim throughout the dashboard and centre console, and a five-seat cabin with the long-wheelbase rear legroom that made these cars genuinely special for rear passengers. An aftermarket Kenwood head unit replaces the original Becker radio. The instrument cluster confirms 192,180 kilometres and presents clearly. The engine bay houses the original M117 V8 with a service sticker from Fairfield European workshop visible on the radiator support, indicating some specialist attention during its life. Two keys, the owner's manual, and service logbook with maintenance records are included with the sale.
The 560SEL commands genuine collector respect in the W126 community. Clean, well-documented examples with service history have been achieving AUD $20,000 to $30,000 through specialist dealers and Shannons auctions. At the listed guide of AUD $18,000 to $26,000, this example is priced in line with the market for a driver-quality, unrestored car with the documentation that gives a buyer confidence in its history.
