1977 Holden Sandman HX - Turquoise Blue - 40,763km - 253ci High Comp. V8, 4-Speed Manual - Unrestored Original
Price Guide: $22,000 - $32,000
1977 Holden Sandman HX, 253ci High Comp. V8, 4-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, 40,763km indicated, 2 seats, turquoise blue.
Description
The Holden Sandman is arguably the most culturally significant panel van ever built in Australia. The HX generation, produced from 1976 through to the arrival of the HZ, represented the Sandman at its most refined, and the turquoise blue colour is one of the most immediately recognisable shades associated with the model. This 1977 example carries just 40,763km on the odometer and presents as a largely unrestored original survivor, a combination that is increasingly hard to find in the collector market.
The exterior shows honest, age-appropriate patina. The turquoise blue paint has faded and oxidised across the panels as you would expect from a vehicle of this vintage, with panel gaps remaining straight and even throughout. The bonnet shows some misalignment on the driver's side, worth investigating. The grille has been replaced with an aftermarket billet-style unit rather than the correct HX unit. Chrome trim and rear bumper show surface pitting and weathering consistent with age. A tow bar has been fitted to the rear. The wheels are period-correct Holden five-spoke alloys with Dunlop Monza HR2 205/70R14 tyres, showing surface rust and age-related wear on the rims. The cargo area reveals the honest state of this vehicle, with the floor requiring attention and aftermarket rear seats noted in place of original Sandman specification. Inside, both front seats show significant foam deterioration with vinyl missing or torn, the dashboard has cracking and discolouration throughout, and the headliner is sagging. The engine bay presents the 253ci high-compression V8 in unmodified original configuration with surface corrosion on ancillaries and hoses consistent with decades of storage.
Low-kilometre unrestored HX Sandmans in original colour are a scarce commodity. The combination of a genuine matching-numbers high-compression V8, the iconic turquoise colour, and 40,763km makes this a compelling restoration or preservation project. Comparable HX Sandmans in original condition with low mileage have traded in the $22,000 - $32,000 range depending on condition and originality. Buyers seeking a genuine, unmodified platform with numbers to match will find this an attractive starting point.
