1974 BMW 520 E12 Sedan - Amazonas Green - 86,002km - M10 Inline-4, 4-Speed Manual, Original Handbook and Logbook

Four-door sedan, 2.0-litre M10 inline-4 with twin carburettors, 4-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, right-hand drive, 86,002km, Amazonas Green, tan interior, Beverley SA.

Description

The E12 was BMW's first 5 Series, launched in 1972 as a direct challenge to Mercedes-Benz in the executive saloon market. The 520 was the entry model, powered by BMW's M10 four-cylinder engine in 2.0-litre form with twin Solex carburettors. It is a mechanically simple, elegant design that has since become one of the more approachable entry points into classic BMW collecting. This 1974 example is an Australian-delivered right-hand drive car, finished in factory Amazonas Green, confirmed by the build data plate visible in the engine bay. The odometer reads 86,002 and the instrument cluster calibration is in kilometres.

The photos show a car that has spent considerable time in storage and needs a full cosmetic restoration before it would be considered a driver. The green paint has oxidised heavily across all panels, particularly on the roof and bonnet where the original metallic finish has chalked and faded significantly. The steel wheels have lost their hubcaps and the wheel faces show surface rust, with the tyres showing sidewall cracking from age. That said, the body panels appear relatively straight with no obvious major accident damage, and the engine bay retains the complete M10 with twin carburettors, period-correct air filter housing, and original ancillaries showing appropriate age patina. The interior presents better than the exterior, with tan leatherette and cloth upholstery that appears largely intact and the dashboard showing no major cracks. The centre console retains the original HVAC controls and a period-style Voxson AM/FM cassette unit, with an aftermarket wooden gear knob on the four-speed shifter. A strong documentation pack accompanies the car, including the original BMW owner's handbook, service logbook with maintenance records, and what appears to be the original key.

Comparable E12 520 examples in good original condition have been trading in Australia in the AUD $12,000 to $18,000 range, with better-restored examples pushing higher as E12 values lift off the base. A project of this nature in storage condition would represent the entry point to that market, priced accordingly for the restoration investment required. The documented history pack and factory colour confirmation add genuine appeal to the right buyer.
