Description
Australian-assembled Mini Mokes are genuinely rare survivors. BMC Australia built these at the Zetland plant in Sydney from 1966, and most have long since succumbed to rust or been broken up. Serial 3087 is a confirmed early example, with the factory BMC Australia identification plate still riveted to the firewall. The plate records the original Empire Green colour, the Type YJ2AB1R designation, Serial 3087, and the engine number 9YB/U/H 3595 S. This is the real thing, documented from the factory, not a conversion or a later import.
The car has been through a thorough restoration covering the key areas. New body panels, a full professional respray in sky blue, interior retrim in white vinyl, a new white surrey canopy and an upgrade to disc brakes. The engine is a 998cc A-Series, an upgrade from the original 848cc unit, which is noted on the factory plate. Photos confirm the sky blue paint holds excellent gloss across all panels with no visible rippling or poor prep. The white vinyl bench seats front and rear present freshly retrimmed with vertical pleating and lap belts fitted to all positions. The engine bay is clean and presentable, showing the A-Series with a single SU carburettor, white-painted cam cover and spin-on oil filter conversion. The dashboard carries the sky blue respray throughout and features hand-painted decorative scrollwork, a period Smiths speedo cluster reading 5,267 miles, and a modern USB charging port added for convenience. Minilite-style alloy wheels replace the original steel items, and the white surrey top and frame are presented in excellent condition.
Driver-quality restorations of documented Australian-assembled Mokes rarely surface. Comparable examples in similar condition have traded between $25,000 and $45,000 depending on provenance and quality. The factory plate intact, the confirmed serial number and the documented restoration work all add to this car's story. The 998cc upgrade makes it a livelier drive than the standard 848cc car. Vendor advises the car is unregistered at time of sale.
