The VL Turbo is one of those cars that just keeps climbing. Powered by the Nissan-sourced RB30ET turbocharged inline-six, the VL Commodore Turbo was the performance surprise of the late 1980s and has become one of the most sought-after Australian sedans of its era. This particular example is a Berlina variant, which means it started life as the luxury model with the full velour interior, and someone has given it the full Walkinshaw Group A visual treatment with a fibreglass body kit, guard flares, boot spoiler and an aggressive lowered stance on aftermarket alloy wheels. It is worth being upfront: this is a Walkinshaw-style replica on a genuine VL Berlina Turbo platform, not a factory Walkinshaw conversion. The modifications are well executed and the car presents strongly.
The exterior has been resprayed in the factory Maroon Metallic and the finish is excellent. The paint holds deep gloss with clean reflections across every panel. The Walkinshaw-style body kit, consisting of front bar, side skirts, guard flares and rear bar, is well fitted and colour-matched. A Group A-style boot spoiler sits on the boot lid. Pop-up headlights have been retrofitted as a non-standard modification, which adds a distinctive look. The car rides on aftermarket 5-spoke alloy wheels with red painted calipers visible behind the spokes. Under the bonnet, the RB30ET is tidy with a red-painted valve cover carrying a "HOLDEN" badge, polished aluminium intercooler piping with red silicone couplers, and a pod-style air filter replacing the factory airbox. The battery has been relocated to the boot. Inside, the all-original Berlina interior in burgundy velour is remarkably well preserved. The seats retain good shape, the dashboard appears uncracked, and the maroon trim throughout is consistent and unfaded. An aftermarket Momo steering wheel has been fitted. The headliner shows very slight age-related looseness but remains intact.
The mechanical upgrades are purposeful: an aftermarket 9-inch rear differential with 3.75 gears, a 3,000rpm high-stall torque converter, and a reconditioned fuel tank with new sender and pump. The vendor has disclosed a clunk noise from the rear left wheel area under driving conditions, which needs investigation and should be factored into bidding. The price guide sits at $40,000 to $50,000, which reflects the strong market for turbo VLs even in modified form.
