1928 Austin 7 Chummy - Green - 747cc Side-Valve Four, 4-Speed Manual, Hand Crank or Electric Start, Folding Hood

1928 Austin 7 Chummy 2-Door Tourer, Rear Wheel Drive, 747cc (0.8L) Inline 4-Cylinder Petrol, 4-Speed Manual, Right Hand Drive, 4 Seats

Description

The Austin 7 is one of the most significant cars in British motoring history. Launched in 1922, the "Baby Austin" brought affordable motoring to the masses in much the same way the Model T Ford had done in America. The Chummy was the original and most recognisable body style, a four-seat open tourer with a folding hood, and its tiny 747cc side-valve engine and lightweight construction made it both economical and genuinely fun to drive. Nearly a century on, the Austin 7 remains one of the most active and well-supported vintage car communities in the world, with clubs, events, and spares networks across Australia and the UK.

This 1928 example is presented in British Racing Green over black wings and valances, a classic and period-appropriate colour combination. The paintwork shows good gloss and appears to be from a quality older restoration. The black fabric folding hood is erected and sits evenly on its framework, with a small celluloid rear window for rearward visibility. The interior is trimmed in dark olive-green leather with horizontal fluted pleating on the bench seats, and includes a four-spoke Bakelite steering wheel with column-mounted advance/retard and throttle levers. The dashboard carries original Smiths speedometer and Lucas ammeter with integrated lighting switch panel, both showing honest age patina. The 747cc side-valve four sits under the two-piece clamshell bonnet, with a yellow-painted valve cover (a cosmetic modification) and modern red HT leads, suggesting the engine has been serviced for reliable running. The car features both hand crank and electric start. Wire-spoke wheels are painted black with period cross-ply tyres. A Prewar Austin Drivers Club "Foundation Member" badge on the radiator confirms club provenance.

Austin 7 Chummys have a well-established market among vintage car enthusiasts, with Australian auction results typically ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 AUD depending on condition and provenance. UK results from Anglia Car Auctions and Bonhams show similar values in sterling. With its club membership history, correct body style, and presentation-ready condition, this Chummy is ready for rally days, club events, or simply the pleasure of vintage motoring at its most charming.
