Description
The XB Fairmont GS wagon is one of those cars that should not work as well as it does. Take a big family hauler, drop a 302 Cleveland V8 in it, bolt on the GS appearance package with twin bonnet scoops and a full-length black side stripe, paint the whole thing in bright orange, and suddenly you have something that turns more heads than most sports cars. This is the kind of car that packed the family into seven seats on Saturday morning and embarrassed Chargers at the lights on Saturday night.
The orange paint presents beautifully across all panels with excellent gloss, depth, and consistency. Panel alignment is even throughout. The black GS side stripe runs the full length of the body from front guard to rear quarter, with the "GS" lettering sitting cleanly on each rear quarter panel. Chrome bumpers, door handles, window surrounds, and drip rails are all bright and in good condition. There is no visible rust anywhere on the body, even in the common trouble spots like wheel arches, sills, and lower quarters. The car sits on aftermarket mesh-style alloy wheels with Ford blue oval centre caps, which suit the look despite not being factory. A towbar is fitted at the rear.
Inside, the cream vinyl Fairmont interior is in excellent condition throughout. Front bucket seats and the rear bench show minimal wear with only light age-related creasing and no tears or cracking. The original wood-grain steering wheel is present and in good condition, and the black dashboard is intact with no major cracking. The engine-turned aluminium dash accents, full Fairmont instrumentation (speedo reading to 240 km/h), analogue clock, and wood-grain console trim are all present and correct. Power windows are fitted, along with air conditioning and tinted glass. A Kenwood CD/USB head unit has been installed, though the fitment could be tidied up. Under the bonnet, the 302 V8 is tidy with painted orange rocker covers, an aftermarket air cleaner, blue silicone plug leads, and a clean engine bay painted to match the body.
The chassis number (JG35RM57698K) decodes as a factory XB Fairmont wagon with the 302 V8 and FMX automatic, confirming the matching numbers drivetrain. XB Falcon prices have strengthened considerably, with my105.com listing XB examples from A$75,000 to A$135,000. A GS wagon with V8 power in this condition sits right in that range. These do not come up often, and when they do, they move fast.
