Description / Overview:
The R107 SL ran for 18 years and is the reason Mercedes still has a reputation for building cars that simply refuse to give up. From 1971 to 1989, the formula barely changed because it did not need to. The 1988 300SL is the last evolution of the R107, running the M103 injected straight-six in place of the older carb units, with improved driveability and better emissions compliance for Australian roads. These late cars are the pick of the R107 range for usability.
This example presents well from the outside. The charcoal metallic paint is consistent across all panels with good gloss and depth. Chrome is strong front to rear, the hardtop sits correctly, and the body lines are straight throughout. Interior is honest, showing its age on the seat bolsters and carpet but not embarrassing. The dashboard is uncracked. Engine bay is complete and the M103 presents as original equipment. The vendor includes log books, owner's manual, and a box of history documentation, plus the hardtop stand and a trunk-mounted CD changer as a bonus.
Two items require attention before bidding. The soft top has not been photographed and its condition is unknown. For an R107 this is not a minor detail. The VIN in the listing differs from the number on the physical plate by two digits, which needs to be verified on inspection. Neither is necessarily a dealbreaker but both need to be resolved.
