1978 Honda CB400 Automatic
Honda built the CB400A Hondamatic for a very specific reason: they genuinely believed automatic transmissions were the future of motorcycling. In the mid-1970s, Honda invested serious engineering dollars into their torque converter-based Hondamatic system and fitted it to both the CB400A and the larger CB750A. They were not right about the future of motorcycling, but they were ahead of their time, and today these bikes are genuinely collectable curiosities with a passionate following among Honda enthusiasts and automatic-motorcycle fans alike.
This 1978 CB400A presents in excellent original condition and shows 12,135 miles from new, consistent with the preserved state of virtually every component. The original blue metallic paint with factory orange, black and white racing stripes is vibrant, glossy and unrepainted. The Hawk Hondamatic side cover decals are intact and legible. There is a small shallow dent on the upper left side of the tank with no paint cracking or rust present. That is the headline cosmetic issue and it is a minor one.
Everything else is as Honda built it. The chrome 2-into-2 exhaust is bright and clean with no pitting. The factory Comstar wheels are straight and undamaged. Chrome on the forks, shocks, front fender and grab rail is excellent. The engine is dry and clean externally with no oil leaks visible. The distinctive Hondamatic instrument pod, showing its 1, Low, and 2 gear positions rather than a tachometer, is in place and appears functional. No clutch lever on the left bar, just as Honda intended. The right handlebar controls the 2-speed selector instead.
Seat vinyl shows age-related surface crazing but no rips or tears. Tyres appear to be serviceable modern replacements, appropriate for safety on a bike of this age. Frame VIN CB400A-2005406 confirmed in photos.
This is a legitimate collector piece: rare automatic variant, low miles, high originality. The Hondamatic CB400A was sold in limited numbers compared to Honda's conventional models, and a survivor this original and this clean does not come along often.
