Description:

1968 Puch Split Single “Twingle”

If you have been after something genuinely different from the typical Japanese or British singles that dominate vintage auctions, the 1968 Puch Split Single is your bike. This Austrian oddity from the Daimler-Steyr-Puch factory is powered by what the motorcycle world knows as the Twingle, a 250cc two-stroke engine where two pistons share a single combustion chamber and cylinder head. Each piston fires off its own spark plug in a staggered sequence, delivering better combustion efficiency and a torque curve that feels more like a four-stroke than a typical two-banger. It is arguably one of the most innovative engine designs ever to reach production and helped Puch dominate European off-road and endurance events through the 1950s and 1960s. Twingle-powered Puch machines are genuine collector pieces today.

This particular example presents as an honest, complete, and unmolested survivor. The silver tank carries both Puch shield badges in great nick, and the red frame and enclosed bodywork panels show original paint with the patina you would expect on a well-preserved 56-year-old machine. The alloy components are very good, with the distinctive fan-vented primary cover, front fender, and crankcase castings all showing age but no damage or cracks. Both torpedo-style silencers are present and structurally sound. Wire-spoke wheels look solid with decent tread remaining.

The cockpit is all original, the VDO speedo with Puch branding on the dial face is intact, and the chrome handlebars and levers are all accounted for. A new battery has been fitted and the vendor reports the bike starts and runs well. The twin exhaust layout is a conversation starter every time this bike is rolled out.

For a collector who wants something no one else has at the show, this is genuinely it. The Puch Twingle is rare in Australia and you could go years without seeing another one.
