Description:

1971 BSA A65 Lightning

Here is one of the machines that defined an era and then had the rug pulled out from under it. The BSA A65 Lightning was the performance twin in Birmingham Small Arms Co.'s final lineup, a lively 650cc parallel twin that sold strongly in both the UK and export markets right up until BSA shut the doors for good in 1973. Finding a running, rideable Lightning today that is not a trailer queen is genuinely good news for anyone who wants to ride British iron at historic events or wants a solid base for careful restoration.

This 1971 example is presented in white with a silver metallic tank crown and a sharp blue pinstripe running the length of the tank panels and side covers. The chrome BSA tank badges are present and correct, the chrome headlight shell is in good condition, and the full-width alloy drum hubs front and rear are the correct type for the model. The bike sits properly on its centrestand and the overall stance is exactly right.

The vendor has been straight up about what has changed: the mufflers are aftermarket reverse-cone items rather than the original cigar-style silencers, and the paint colour is non-original. Everything else is described as largely original, and the photos back that up. The Amal Concentric carburetors are the correct type for 1971, and there is some light oil weep visible at the crankcase mating surfaces in the photos, which is absolutely standard BSA twin behaviour and nothing to be concerned about.

Matching numbers are confirmed by both the steering head VIN tag and the engine crankcase stamping, both clearly photographed and legible: A65L GE10439 on frame and engine alike, consistent with 1971 production. The bike was previously registered in Queensland and used for historic club runs, which is a good sign it has been properly maintained and exercised.

The listed odometer reads 103 miles, which should be read as a very low indicated figure on a 50-plus year old instrument rather than the actual total mileage.

For collectors of British iron, a working BSA Lightning from the final years of BSA production is increasingly hard to find. This one runs and rides per the vendor, has matching numbers, honest provenance, and strong collector appeal. Whether you ride it at historic meetings or restore it sympathetically, this is a cracking classic.
