Description

The 1c S.Y. Aurora definitive is one of the signature stamps of Australian Antarctic Territory philately. Issued in 1966 as part of the first AAT definitive series, the design commemorates the S.Y. Aurora, the three-masted barquentine that transported Sir Douglas Mawson on his 1911 to 1914 and 1929 to 1931 Antarctic expeditions. Aurora is one of the most storied vessels in polar exploration history, and this stamp connects directly to Mawson's defining contribution to Australian Antarctic science and sovereignty.



The full sheet of 100 photographs well across both images provided. Close-up review confirms clean, intact perforations with very good to excellent centering throughout. Colors are fresh and vibrant with no visible fading or oxidation. The center gutter carries color control marks (traffic lights) showing the full printing color sequence, a feature well-regarded by sheet collectors as direct evidence of the printing process and a marker of sheet completeness. Paper appears flat and undisturbed across the full sheet, consistent with original gum in unhinged condition. Gum state cannot be confirmed from photographs alone but the flat paper strongly suggests MNH.
