Collection of Cricket Books - Approximately 30-35 Volumes Including Pavilion Library Matched Series Approximately 30-35 cricket books in hardcover and paperback formats. Includes a matched four-volume Pavilion Library cricket classics series. Good to very good condition throughout. Description The standout feature of this collection is a matched set of four volumes from the Pavilion Library cricket classics series, all in uniform green cloth binding with cream spine labels: "Ranji" by Alan Ross (a biography of the legendary K.S. Ranjitsinhji, one of the most exotic figures in cricket's history), "Sort of a Cricket Person" by E.W. Swanton (the autobiography of one of English cricket's most influential writers and commentators), "Lord's 1787-1945" by Sir Pelham Warner (the history of cricket's most famous ground by one of England's most celebrated captains), and "End of an Innings" by Denis Compton (the memoir of the genius Middlesex and England batsman). Collectors who are building or completing this series will recognise the value of finding all four together. David Frith's "Archie Jackson" (Pavilion Books) is one of the more sought-after cricket biographies among serious collectors. Jackson scored 164 on his Test debut against England in 1929 at the age of 19, was widely regarded as the most naturally gifted Australian batsman of his generation, and died of tuberculosis two years later at 23. Frith, the foremost cricket historian and statistician of his generation, gives the story full treatment. Peter Oborne's "Basil D'Oliveira" is the definitive account of the most politically significant moment in post-war cricket - when the South African government's refusal to allow D'Oliveira to tour forced England into a confrontation with apartheid sport that changed cricket history. It is a compelling book on a subject that mattered far beyond sport. Further strong titles include "Cardus on Cricket" by Neville Cardus (Souvenir Press), "A Century of Wisden: An Extract from Every Edition 1900-1999" (John Wisden), Adam Gilchrist's "True Colours" autobiography (Macmillan), Richard Hadlee's "Rhythm and Swing" (Souvenir Press), "Another Bloody Tour" by Frances Edmonds (Collins Willow), county cricket histories (Gloucestershire by David Green and Middlesex by David Lemmon, both Helm), Dickie Bird's "White Cap and Bails" (which carries the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award marking on its dust jacket), Dickie Bird's "My Autobiography," Ian Botham (two editions, Collins Willow), "The Longest Game" by Alex Buzo and Jamie Grant, "Cricket's Strangest Matches" by Andrew Ward, "The Joy of Cricket" edited by John Bright-Holmes, and Richie Benaud's "The Appeal of Cricket." At specialist dealer prices the replacement cost of this collection runs to AUD $500-$1,500 or more depending on editions.
