Collection of Cricket Books - Approximately 20-22 Volumes - Literary Classics and Biographies

Approximately 20-22 cricket books in hardcover and paperback formats. Good to very good condition throughout. Mixed English and Australian cricket writing spanning biography, literary essays, history, and commentary.

Description

This collection is built around some of the finest names in cricket writing. Neville Cardus, whose "Autobiography" is included here, wrote about cricket the way others write about music - with feeling, precision, and a genuine love for the game. John Arlott, represented by "Arlott on Cricket" edited by David Rayvern Allen (Collins Willow), spent decades making cricket on the radio sound like poetry. C.L.R. James, whose collected cricket writing is present in the Allison and Busby edition, produced what many regard as the most intellectually serious book about cricket ever written. These are not casual purchases - they are the kind of books a serious reader keeps.

The biography collection is equally strong. E.W. Swanton's "Gubby Allen: Man of Cricket" covers one of English cricket's most significant player-administrators. "Jim Laker: A Biography" by Alan Hill gives full treatment to the man who took 19 wickets in a single Test match against Australia in 1956 - a record that stands to this day and almost certainly always will. "The Test Match Career of Walter Hammond" by Derek Lodge and "Ken Farnes: Diary of an Essex Master" by David Thurlow represent specialist cricket biography at its most focused. Hugh de Selincourt's "The Cricket Match," a novel first published in 1924 and considered a classic of cricket fiction, adds real literary depth to the lot.

Further titles include "Double Century: 200 Years of Cricket in The Times" edited by Marcus Williams (Collins Willow), "W.G." by Robert Low (a biography of W.G. Grace published by Richard Cohen Books), "Len Hutton Remembered" edited by Donald Trelford, "Tangled Up in White" by Peter Roebuck (Hodder and Stoughton), "Letting Rip: The Fast Bowling Threat from Lillee to Waqar" by Simon Wilde, "A Typhoon Called Tyson" by Frank Tyson (Sports Pages), "Cricket's Hall of Shame" by Dave Warner (ABC Books), and "Harold Gimblett: Tormented Genius of Cricket" by David Foot. At specialist dealer prices, the replacement cost of this collection runs to AUD $300-$700 or more depending on editions.
