1977 Holden LX Torana A9X Genuine Matching Numbers
Few names carry the weight in Australian motorsport history like the A9X Torana. Built to dominate Bathurst, the A9X package transformed Holden’s LX Torana into one of the most formidable race cars of its time. With Peter Brock and the Holden Dealer Team behind the wheel, it became a track legend and a symbol of Holden’s racing dominance.
This example is a genuine, matching-numbers A9X sedan, presented in the striking Absinthe Yellow. One of only 405 A9Xs ever produced for the public, and just 305 four-door sedans, it is among the rarest Holden performance cars ever built. Having been part of the current custodian’s private collection for over 30 years, it presents in outstanding condition and benefits from a full engine rebuild carried out in 2012.
A9X Torana History
The A9X was introduced in August 1977, just in time for the Sandown 500 endurance race. Officially released as a “Performance Equipment Package” for the LX Torana SS and SL/R with the 308ci V8, its upgrades were so extensive that the A9X is regarded as a model in its own right. It came with revised suspension, a Salisbury 10-bolt differential, rear disc brakes, and a lightweight bonnet with L34-style scoop.
Unlike earlier models, the A9X was launched quietly, without advertising, to avoid a repeat of the 1972 “Supercar Scare.” Compliance was limited to just a few months between August and December 1977, with one final car in January 1978. Only 405 cars were built: 305 sedans and 100 hatches. Available colours included Palais White, Panama Green, Flamenco Red, Ultra Blue, Jasmine Yellow, Valencia Orange, and Dynasty Gold, with additional variations later added. Contrary to popular belief, not all A9X four-doors had silver around the paint-out on the rear spoiler. Both silver and black were used, depending on the colour of the vehicle.
The A9X is forever etched into Bathurst folklore thanks to Peter Brock’s legendary 1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 victory in an A9X hatch, where he and Jim Richards finished six laps ahead of the field. In an unforgettable flourish, Brock set a new lap record on the very last lap of the race, underlining the car’s dominance. While the hatches were the weapon of choice on the track, the four-door A9X sedans shared the same DNA, benefitting from the same race-bred suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and lightweight engineering. This gave them balance, handling, and road presence that set them apart from anything else of the era — making even the road-going sedans among the most capable and rewarding Australian muscle cars ever built.
