1968 Holden HK GTS Monaro 307
The HK Monaro changed Australian motoring forever. When Holden released the sleek, pillarless coupe in 1968, it immediately captured the nation’s imagination. Its long, flowing lines, pillarless profile and aggressive stance earned it instant hero status, and in V8 GTS trim, it cemented Holden’s place in the muscle car era.
This particular example is a 1968 Holden HK GTS Monaro 307, finished in the hero colour Warwick Yellow. It has been lovingly cared for by its current custodian for the past 28 years. Restored 17 years ago and having travelled just 2,200 miles since, it remains in superb condition. Prior to that, it spent 17 years parked up in a shed, meaning it has been garaged for approximately 43 of its 57 years. The car comes with original hubcaps and a set of spares, though it currently wears widened 7-inch HK slotted rims for a more aggressive stance.
Restoration & Condition
During the restoration, completed 17 years ago, the following work was undertaken:
Full repaint in Warwick Yellow
Complete suspension overhaul including new bushes, springs and shocks
10-bolt LSD diff (repainted, oil replaced, remains quiet)
New steering components, including ball joints and tie rod ends
Professionally rebuilt 307ci V8 engine, with new accessories, radiator and hoses
New brakes, rear wheel cylinders, shoes, drums, rebuilt front callipers and new pads
New interior including carpets, dash pad, wood inserts, recalibrated instrument cluster and re-chromed trim
The car retains a set of new GTS hubcaps (stored in the boot) but has been run with the preferred black wheels by the vendor. An aftermarket sunroof was fitted many years ago. Please note there are no body ID tags and no books.
HK Monaro History
The HK Monaro was the car that ignited Australia’s muscle car revolution. With its arrival, Holden finally had a stylish coupe that could compete with imported American muscle cars. It quickly became a sales success and a cultural icon, crowned Wheels Car of the Year in 1968. The Monaro’s motorsport debut was equally legendary, with the HK GTS 327 V8 claiming victory at the 1968 Bathurst 500, establishing the Monaro name as a force to be reckoned with on and off the track.
Today, the HK Monaro GTS remains one of the most collectible and admired Australian classics. Its timeless styling, Bathurst-winning pedigree, and rarity make it a cornerstone of any serious Holden or muscle car collection.
