1942 Ford Jail Bar Jim Beam Pickup
This remarkable vehicle blends classic 1940s Ford design with a unique chapter in Australian promotional motoring. In the 1990s, Jim Beam commissioned a series of custom pickups to be awarded to Australia’s highest-selling stores. Only a handful were produced, and this example is believed to be the only one built using the iconic Ford Jail Bar body style.
Retaining its genuine 1942 chassis and body, the truck has been modified with a HQ front clip and HZ 1-Tonner differential. Power comes from a 350ci Chev V8 paired with a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission and B&M-style shifter. The running gear includes a rebuilt carburettor, new thermo fan, rebuilt brake booster with dual diaphragm, new master cylinder, new uni joints and centre bearing, and new front springs and shocks. Disc brakes have been fitted up front for improved stopping power.
Inside, it features a three-person bench seat with seatbelts, woodgrain steering wheel, hidden CD player in the glovebox, GPS speedo, fresh wiring and fuses, and battery relocated under the seat.
Jim Beam promotional cars became icons of 1990s Australian pub and bottle shop culture, recognised as prizes that celebrated success in retail sales. This example, built on the rugged and instantly recognisable Ford Jail Bar body, stands apart as a one-off creation blending classic hot rod character with promotional history. Its rarity and story make it a true talking point wherever it goes.
