1973 Holden LJ GTR XU-1 Torana – Brock Bathurst Tribute
The Torana GTR XU-1 is one of Holden’s most celebrated creations. Born from a desire to take on Ford at Mount Panorama, the XU-1’s lightweight body, agile handling and powerful 202ci six-cylinder engine made it a formidable Bathurst contender. In 1972, Peter Brock drove an XU-1 into the history books with a legendary victory at Bathurst, cementing both his own career and the Torana’s place in Australian motorsport folklore.
This vehicle is a genuine 1973 Holden LJ Torana GTR XU-1, confirmed by its body plate (Model LJ82911M, Body No. 12291B). While originally finished in Lina Mint Metallic with black vinyl trim, it has been configured as a tribute to Brock’s Bathurst-winning machine, complete with its period-correct 202ci inline six fitted with triple Stromberg carburettors and a 4-speed manual gearbox.
Provenance & Presentation
Built at Holden’s Dandenong plant, this example combines the authenticity of a factory GTR XU-1 with the excitement of motorsport heritage. It retains the key factory identifiers - Model LJ82911M, Body No. 12291B, Trim 1832-40X and Paint 567-13127 - providing peace of mind for collectors who want both originality and motorsport nostalgia.
XU-1 History
The LJ GTR XU-1 was Holden’s answer to Ford’s V8 Falcons in touring car racing. Developed with input from Brock and Harry Firth, the XU-1 used lightness and agility as its greatest weapons. It proved itself on the track with multiple Bathurst podiums and, most famously, Brock’s solo victory in 1972, where he mastered the mountain in wet conditions against a field of more powerful rivals. That moment turned the XU-1 into an icon of Australian motorsport and made Brock a household name.
Today, the GTR XU-1 remains one of the most collectible Australian muscle cars. Genuine examples are increasingly rare, and tribute cars like this allow enthusiasts to celebrate the legacy of Holden’s racing dominance in style.
