Leewana Harrison

‘Yalari’s Growth’

900mm (w) x 600m (h)

Story: This painting shows how over the years Yalari has brought Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people closer by giving them an opportunity to go to boarding school, this is shown through the background. The community in the middle represents Yalari and the outer communities represents all the communities the Yalari children come from. It shows them travelling into Yalari as they receive their scholarship. The butterflies represent Yalari’s growth and progress over the 20 years supporting children from Torres Strait and Aboriginal communities.

Artist bio: My name is Leewana Harrison, and I’m a proud Ghungalou and Wakka Wakka woman from Wondai, Queensland. I graduated from St Margaret's Anglican Girls School in 2024 on a Yalari scholarship.

Art has always been a way for me to connect with my culture and share my stories. Through my work, I explore the strength and resilience of my community, drawing inspiration from the traditions passed down through generations.
