1969 Mercedes-Benz 220 (W115 Strich-Acht)
2.2L M115 Inline-4, Automatic, 90,408 recorded, 4-Door Sedan, Left-Hand Drive, RWD. Chassis Prefix: 115 010 22. Australian delivered. Location: Villawood NSW. No GST.
Description / Overview:
The W115 Strich-Acht is one of those cars that just keeps going. Mercedes-Benz built these with a generation in mind that expected their car to outlive them, and the reputation is well-earned. This 1969 220/8 is Australian delivered and wearing its original Hellblau paint, factory code 304, confirmed on the Daimler-Benz data plate riveted to the engine bay. The standing hood star is upright, the chrome vertical-bar grille is solid, and the boot-lid "220" and "AUTOMATIC" script badges are both present and correct.
One thing to know upfront: this is a left-hand drive car. The steering wheel is on the left. That is a genuine rarity in Australia and it adds real character, but it also means you will need to sort a roadworthiness certificate and confirm your state's registration requirements for a LHD vehicle before you pick it up. That is the practical reality, and it is priced with that in mind.
Exterior condition is good for a 55-year-old car. The Hellblau paint carries decent shine with no obvious rust-through or significant chips. Chrome shows age-appropriate minor dulling, nothing more. A tow bar has been fitted at the rear. Steel wheels with original pagoda-style Mercedes hubcaps are fitted, blackwall radials in moderate condition, full-size spare in the boot.
Inside is where honest attention is needed. The door cards and rear bench are in reasonable shape. The dashboard pad is a different story. It is severely cracked and peeling with the substrate exposed across most of the top surface, it needs full replacement. The headliner is sagging and pulling away in multiple locations. The front passenger seat base has a visible tear. The steering wheel rim shows age-related cracking. An aftermarket radio and a couple of toggle switches have been added below the dash, and there is some loose wiring near the steering column that suggests incomplete electrical work at some point. The engine bay houses the original M115 in unmodified, unrestored condition, exactly as you would expect from a car of this age.
The odometer reads 90,408, but the speedometer is calibrated in km/h. The listing calls it miles. Verify the actual unit before you bid.
Price Guide: $8,000 - $14,000
The LHD configuration and interior condition keep the ceiling realistic. A solid project or a runner for someone who appreciates the Strich-Acht and is not afraid of interior work. Australian delivery is a genuine plus and not common on these examples.
