Description / Overview:
This one is the real deal. A 1977 Datsun 260Z 2+2, the longer wheelbase four-seat variant of Nissan's iconic Z-car, pulled apart completely and rebuilt from the ground up on a rotisserie between 2020 and 2023. Three years of committed work. The result speaks for itself.
The respray is Lamborghini Titanio silver, and it is a brilliant choice for the S30 body. The gloss is deep and consistent, reflections across the bonnet and doors are sharp and undistorted, which tells you the panels underneath are straight and properly prepared. The inner fenders and engine bay walls are painted in body colour, the tell-tale sign of a proper rotisserie process. Chrome on the front and rear bumpers is bright with no visible pitting. The long bonnet with its twin louvre sets, the swept fastback roofline, the rear haunches, all of it looks exactly as Nissan intended when they penned this body.
The factory chassis plate is intact and correct: GRS30-015749, engine type L26, 2565cc confirmed. Full restoration documentation with photographs comes with the car. The next owner gets a proper paper trail, not just a seller's story.
Under the bonnet, the L26 inline-six has been rebuilt with fewer than 5,000 km on the rebuild. One thing to know: the original Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection has been removed and replaced with twin side-draft carburettors. This is a common and well-regarded modification on the L-series engine. It simplifies maintenance and sharpens throttle response, but it is a departure from factory specification. The choke switch integrated into the centre console controls the setup. Blue silicone spark plug wires are fitted. The engine bay is clean and properly detailed. The 5-speed gearbox has also been fully rebuilt. Light use residue is present, consistent with a car that has been driven and enjoyed post-restoration rather than trailered.
Inside, the restoration quality is immediately apparent. The rear 2+2 bench is upholstered in black vinyl with horizontal pleated stitching and presents in excellent condition, no tears, no cracking. Black loop-pile carpet looks fresh and well-fitted. The correct 5-speed shift knob and boot are well presented, centre console trim is in excellent shape. A modern CarPlay/Android touchscreen head unit sits neatly in the factory radio position, paired with a reverse camera, central locking, alarm, and USB. The three-spoke steering wheel with the Z logo centre pad is in place. The original binnacle houses the speedometer calibrated to 240 km/h, confirming Australian delivery, alongside the tacho and three auxiliary gauges in the centre pod.
The one honest detail: the original dashboard pad was not replaced during the restoration. It shows scuffing and surface texture wear around the gauge binnacle and the upper surface. For a 47-year-old car with a freshly rebuilt engine and a show-quality respray, that is a minor footnote, not a deal-breaker. Period 4-spoke silver alloys with Kumho tyres. Club/conditional plates, ready for events and weekend use today.
Price Guide: $55,000 - $75,000
Rotisserie-restored Z-cars with documented engine rebuilds are commanding serious money right now. The 2+2 body sits slightly below the two-seat examples in pure collector demand, but the depth and quality of this build more than closes the gap. The carburettor conversion is worth understanding if strict factory originality matters to you, but for a driver it is a genuine improvement in usability and enjoyment.
