Description:

Vintage Hexagonal Concertina with Ornate Inlaid Rosewood Case - Early 20th Century

Description
A striking example of late 19th or early 20th century concertina craftsmanship, featuring a hexagonal wooden case with elaborate marquetry inlay work in contrasting timber. The instrument displays the characteristic aesthetic of Victorian-era squeeze-box design, with decorative carved scrollwork and geometric patterns throughout the exterior panels.

Case Construction
The case is constructed from rosewood or similar dark hardwood with ornamental inlaid timber creating botanical and geometric motifs across all visible surfaces. The hexagonal form is typical of mid-period concertina design. Brass corner fittings and hinges secure the structure. The lid features a black velvet or felt interior lining, now aged and worn. A leather carrying strap is affixed to the upper section.

Concertina Specifications
The instrument itself features a black leather bellows with brass studs and reinforcement rings. The button keyboard is arranged in the traditional concertina pattern with mother-of-pearl or bone inlays marking the button tops. The reeds appear intact, though the instrument has not been tested for playability. Metal reed plates are visible through the open case.

Condition Notes
This is a used vintage piece showing age-appropriate wear consistent with 80-120 years of storage and occasional use. The case exhibits surface marks, minor scratches, and patina throughout. The leather bellows show creasing and age-related wear. The interior lining is loose and discoloured. The instrument itself appears structurally sound with no obvious cracks or major damage to the wooden body. All buttons appear present. The brass fittings show oxidation and patina.

Included
Concertina with original hexagonal case only. No accessories, reeds, or documentation included.

Playability & Restoration
This instrument has not been tested for playability. Vintage concertinas of this age typically require professional servicing, reed adjustment, and bellows restoration before use. Prospective buyers should budget for professional assessment and restoration if playability is desired. The case is suitable for display or storage as-is.

Provenance & Market Context
Concertinas of this style and construction were manufactured throughout Europe and Britain during the 1880s-1920s period. Quality examples with ornate cases command collector interest. This piece represents solid mid-range craftsmanship typical of the era. The hexagonal case design and marquetry work suggest European manufacture, possibly German or British origin.
