SPANISH SILVER PIECE OF EIGHT COIN FROM 1784 EL CAZADOR SHIPWRECKWeighs 20.9 Grams. Its Probably Dated 1783. The El Cazador Is Often Described As "The Shipwreck That Changed The World" And Is One Of The Worlds Largest And Significant Shipwrecks. It Is Respomnsible For Lousiana Becoming A Part Of The Ujnited States. The Spanish Colony Of Lousiania Was In A Financial Mess And Mostly The Economy Was Run Using Paper Iou'S Which Were Trading At A Large Discount From Face Value. In January 1784 Two Years Of Silver Was Loaded Onto The El Cazador In Veracruz Mexico Bound For Lousiania With 18 Tons Of Silver - Mostly Spanish Pieces Of Eight. The Plan Was To Redeem The Paper At Full Face Value And Keep The Locals Happy Being Spanish. The Ship Was Lost And The Loss Was Such A Huge Burden On Spain That They Couldent Afford To Retain The Colony And Lousiania Was Sold To The French Who Then Resold It To The United States In 1803 For Three Cents An Acre Nearly Doubling The Size Of The United States. In 1993 A Fishing Trawler "The Mistake" Got Its Nets Caught Up In Something 50 Miles From New Orleans And Found Coins. The El Cazador Was Found.
