Description

A well-modelled cast bronze art medallion bearing a high-relief portrait of W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), the English playwright, novelist and short story writer best known for works including Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge, and The Moon and Sixpence. The obverse carries a bold, expressive bust portrait of Maugham in his later years, showing his characteristically craggy and deeply lined features with strong sculptural presence. The inscription "W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM" arcs around the portrait field. The reverse is plain (uniface format), typical of commemorative art medals and portrait medallions produced for collectors and institutions.


The obverse retains good detail with natural dark brown patina settled into the recesses. The plain reverse shows light handling marks and surface wear consistent with age. A solid piece of numismatic art for the literary collector.
