Description:

1968 BMW R60/2 US

The BMW /2 series is where vintage BMW motorcycle collecting begins and ends for a lot of people. Produced between 1960 and 1969, the /2 bikes represented the final evolution of BMW's classic post-war boxer twins before the company modernised with the /5 range in 1970. They are overbuilt, engineered to last indefinitely, and the best of them are still being ridden as daily transport today, 60 years on.

This particular example is an R60/2 in US market specification, which makes it genuinely rarer than the more commonly seen European models. Here is why: the European /2 series featured the distinctive Earles-fork front suspension, a leading-link design developed for sidecar stability. The US market demanded conventional telescopic forks, which BMW obliged, creating a small but distinct sub-variant. The result looks closer to a modern motorcycle in profile and is considered by many to be the more handsome configuration. Collectors specifically seek these out.

The bike shows 31,151 miles on the original VDO speedometer and carries a New Jersey registration sticker from approximately 1974-75 on the rear fender. This strongly suggests the motorcycle has been carefully stored for the better part of five decades, which goes a long way to explaining the honest, time-capsule condition. It runs well according to the vendor, who has fitted new carburettors. The exhaust and mufflers are described as excellent, which the photos confirm.

This is not a concours bike and the listing makes no such claim. The seat cover is well-worn and needs replacing, the wiring requires attention, and the carburettors have been replaced with aftermarket units fitted with pod filters rather than the original BMW airbox. The paint and chrome carry honest age patina. These are all normal considerations for a project or restoration candidate of this era and age, and none of them affect the fundamental integrity of the machine.

Matching numbers are confirmed (VIN 1810620, Engine VG1810620). The shaft drive, 4-speed gearbox, and drum brakes front and rear are all present and correct. The chrome mufflers are genuinely excellent and the tank badges are intact.

For a BMW enthusiast or vintage collector, this is a solid starting point, the rarer US-spec telescopic fork variant no less. Buy it, get the seat done, sort the wiring, swap in the correct air filter setup, and you have a running piece of motorcycle history. Or put it in a collection as-is. Either way it earns its place.
