Heathcote Shiraz 2017 ($35) – Very rare to find a wine exhibiting this much age for such a giveaway price! The vines are just over two decades in age, and the wine includes 4% Viognier, which was co-fermented. The final blend spent a year in French oak for maturation, 15% of which was new.

The colour is a red/garnet, while the nose does reveal that the wine has age. There are some earthy notes and animal skin aromas. It is a little on the rustic side, which some will love, with hints of leaf litter and dry herbs. There is obvious maturity. Those not familiar with wines which have spent some time in the cellar, at this price, how can you not explore? There is a seductive texture and impressive length with fine tannins on a lingering finish. Still has another half dozen years ahead of it. 92.

Deep plum with a crimson hue
NOSE
Dark berry fruit lifted with Viognier to give a touch of fragrance. Beautifully
balanced with white pepper nuances.
PALATE
Subtle oak finish from new French Oak [15%] and older French oak [85%].
Firm tannins help to create a wine with good length.
WINEMAKEING
Co-fermenting 98% Heathcote Shiraz with 2% Viognier has created a
beautifully flavoured wine. The wine spent 14 days on skins to give it
strong colour and flavour. It was then racked to barrel where it remained
for 12 months before bottling in April 2018. The result is an elegant
shiraz showing an abundance of dark fruit, lifted spice and distinct white
pepper nuances. The French oak adds structure while the tannins give
the wine great length. With careful cellaring the wine will continue to
improve until for 10 years.
