1870S - 1940S CHINA BAMBOO TALLY TOKEN MONEY COIN COLLECTION

During The Turbulent Times And Loss Of Government Authority During The Late 19Th Century Qing Dynasty There Was A Shortage Of Coins And Currency. To Alleviate The Shortage Various Organizations Issued Wooden (Usually Bamboo) "Tokens". The First Were Issued By The Mat Manufacturers Of Xushuan In 1877 As "Emergency Money". They Were Originally Supposed To Be Used Only Between Business People And Suppliers But Soon Became Generally Used By The Population. Many Businesses Soon Followed And By 1895 The Local Governments Themselves Were Issuing Tallies.
Even After The Communists Took Over They Remained Popular And Readily Accepted As Money. In The 1930S And 1940S They Were Particularly Issued By Tea Houses - Some Later Tallies Were Even Denominated In "Tea Bags" Rather Than As A Low Denomination Coin.
