Description:

Papua New Guinea Carved Spirit Board (Gope)

Origin: Gulf or Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea
Material: Hand-carved hardwood with natural pigment traces
Approximate Dimensions: H 195cm x W 50cm x D 23cm

A striking hand-carved wooden spirit board (Gope) from Papua New Guinea, featuring a boldly stylised ancestral face with deep incised patterns, wide eyes, and a prominent tongue-like feature symbolising strength and spiritual communication. Traditionally created by the Gulf and Sepik River peoples, such boards were believed to embody protective ancestral spirits and were displayed in men’s ceremonial houses (haus tambaran) to safeguard the clan and ensure success in battle and daily life.

This example shows beautiful age and patina, with intricate surface carving and expressive detailing characteristic of early to mid-20th century works. A captivating piece of Oceanic tribal art that embodies both cultural heritage and powerful sculptural presence.
